Comprehensive Head and Neck Cancer Center
The University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute Comprehensive Head and Neck Cancer Center offers patient-centered care from a multidisciplinary team that focuses exclusively on treating cancers of the head and neck. This includes cancers of the oral cavity (tongue, jaw, lip, cheek, and hard palate), throat (tonsil, and base of tongue), voice box, nose and sinus cavity, skull base, salivary glands, thyroid gland and parathyroid gland. In addition to cancer of the head and neck mucosa, we also treat a high volume of complicated skin cancers of the head and neck, including cutaneous melanoma.
Numerous studies have demonstrated that improved outcomes in head and neck cancer care occur in high-volume centers. The Comprehensive Head and Neck Cancer Center at the University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute is the highest volume center in our region, and the only center with the expertise to provide every aspect of head and neck cancer care.
- Experts in Head and Neck Cancer
Our clinical team includes head and neck cancer surgeons, radiation oncologists, medical oncologists, head and neck radiologists, pathologists, speech therapists and experienced head and neck cancer nurses.
Our head and neck surgeons are fellowship-trained in head and neck surgical oncology and microvascular reconstruction. In addition, we have surgeons that specialize in minimally invasive thyroid surgery, endoscopic skull base surgery, and minimally-invasive robotic approaches to the head and neck. Our radiation oncologists are the only radiation oncologists in the region with a primary focus of treating head and neck cancer.
Our medical oncologists are also dedicated to the treatment of head and neck cancer. Our speech therapists specialize in the treatment of head and neck cancer patients. They are intimately involved from the time of diagnosis to maximize speech and swallowing function. Other subspecialties—facial plastic surgery, neurosurgery, thoracic surgery, dermatology, ophthalmology, oral surgery, dentistry and dental rehabilitation—work closely with our core team to deliver comprehensive, personalized care to our head and neck cancer patients.
People diagnosed with head and neck cancer face unique challenges that can greatly impact their quality of life. Unlike other malignancies, head and neck cancer has the potential to significantly affect a patient’s appearance, speech and swallowing and other senses. Rehabilitation begins before treatment starts. From the day of diagnosis, we proactively work to optimize each patient’s quality of life and provide the best opportunity for preservation of speech, taste and swallowing function and overall physical appearance.
The UC Cancer Institute Comprehensive Head and Neck Cancer Center is the only team in our region that provides truly multidisciplinary care. We conduct a weekly dedicated multidisciplinary head and neck tumor board that brings all disciplines together—in one room—to map the best course of action for each patient.
Like all UC Cancer Institute-affiliated physicians, our head and neck cancer specialists also serve as faculty members at the UC College of Medicine, ensuring access to the latest scientifically validated medical information to help patients live healthier lives. They also serve as educators for the next generation of physicians in training and provide continuing education opportunities for community physicians.
