The UC Cancer Institute gastrointenstinal cancer team is committed to providing the most advanced, evidence-based medical care available while working vigorously to improve upon the standard-of-care through research. The team has extensive experience in complex cancer case management for patients with heart disease, organ failure and secondary tumors.

Our gastrointestinal cancer team offers unique services, including:

  • Pancreas: Laparoscopic and robot-assisted pancreatectomy procedures including whipple, distal, central, spleen-sparing and total pancreatectomy approachesĀ 
  • Liver: Laparoscopic surgery, hepatectomy and radiofrequency ablation/chemo-embolization for inoperable liver tumors
  • Esophagus: Minimally invasive esophagectomy, Iber-Lewis esophagectomy, trans-heital esophagectomy
  • Peritoneal: Cytoreduction HIPEC (hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy) for advanced appendix, colorectal and ovarian cancers
  • Colorectal: Minimally invasive surgical procedures, including laparoscopic abdominoperineal resection (APR) for colorectal cancer, transanal endoscopic microsurgical (TEM) procedure for rectal cancer, HIPEC for advanced colorectal cancersĀ 
  • 24-hour physician and hospital coverage for routine patient care and complex patient recovery in University of Cincinnati Medical Center's Surgical Intensive Care Unit
  • Advanced diagnostic imaging for staging and treatment planning
  • 2D and 3D radiation therapy to improve accuracy of delivery while minimizing side effects
  • Targeted medical therapies, including experimental clinical trials
  • Pain and symptom management through the UC Medical Center patient support services team
