Comprehensive Brain Tumor Center
The UC Brain Tumor Center—which bridges the UC Neuroscience Institute and UC Cancer Institute—uses the most sophisticated technology and procedures available to treat complex cancers of the brain, head, neck, and central nervous system. The Brain Tumor Center is at the forefront of advances to prolong and improve the quality of life for patients with every type of malignant brain tumor, including glioblastomas, gliomas, head and neck tumors, spinal tumors and metastatic tumors.
The multidisciplinary team includes fellowship-trained specialists in neurosurgery, neuro-oncology, neuro-radiology, radiation oncology, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, neuro-ophthalmology and medical oncology. Our commitment to discovery-driven medicine has helped our specialists establish new protocols in the treatment of primary and metastatic tumors, particularly in the areas of radiation implant therapy, chemotherapy wafer implant therapy and radiotherapy.
Treatment of each individual begins with a multidisciplinary team review. Complex cases are discussed at a weekly multidisciplinary tumor board, comprised of involves physician specialists in neurosurgery, radiation oncology, neuro-oncology, otolaryngology-head and neck surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, endocrinology, neuropathology, neuroradiology and restorative medicine. Nurses and research associates ensure that each patient is screened for a potential clinical trial that could positively impact care.
Research has shown that patients with brain tumors who are treated in high-volume, academic-based medical centers like ours have reduced risk of surgical complications and increased survival.
